Description |
This photogragh was taken while this painting of Steinbeck was hung in window of the Art Gallery at the foot of David Street, above the Hovden Cannery. According to Mr Hemp, Steinbeck thought that Ellwood Graham's commissioned portrait of him was so bad that he made him do it over again. This gave Ms. Deim (nee Barbara Stevenson), who was concurrently doing a non-commissioned portrait of Steinbeck, and who was Mr Graham's wife, plenty of time to paint details, such as how he held his pencil._Ms. Deim made modifications to this painting several times over the years, including the signature, copyright date, and the background painting. In this photo, the background painting appears to be of a 'reclining nude,' but the final version shows a pastoral scene of rolling hills.CREDIT NECESSARY (see 'copyright clearance' for credit) Digital copy only.
