Description |
A photo of the Monterey County courthouse, 240 Church Street in Salinas, California. This building is in East of Eden. This shows two of the 61 busts that depict Monterey County history, done by Joseph Jacinto Mora (1876-1947), the French-Spanish-Uruguayan-US artist who sculpted all of the pieces for the WPA-built, early Brutalist-Moderne courthouse. Mora studied at the Art Student's League (New York City), Cowles School (Boston), studied with William Merritt Chase and received encouragement from Frederic Remington. Despite being a successful cartoonist and illustrator, in 1903 Mora left for the West and continued to travel throughout the US. After 1920, he lived in Carmel full time. Mora was also an illustrator, painter, photographer, mapmaker, writer and designer. |
