Dearest Patricia:
You’ll never know what a lift you gave me when you phoned me this morning to say, “Goodbye” just before taking off for Monterey to the jazz festival! I was delighted, as usual, to hear you and talk with you briefly over the phone – a pleasure I had not expected, for I thought you might have left real early. But I was made very happy by the thought that you had wanted to say “Goodbye” to me. I hope that your time at the festival has brought you the satisfactions you have anticipated and I look forward to hearing something at least about the performers and their offerings. I’m sorry you had to miss Mingus but I admire greatly your sense of balance and steadfastness of purpose that enable you to stick to what you feel you need to get done before you leave. Too many persons would just walk off and leave their places in disarray and their obligations unfulfilled!
Tomorrow – Monday – in the afternoon at least I’ll be going to Menlo again. Carol & Reggie Molony have been trying to get me up for a dinner visit ever since she got back from Mexico and we’ve had dates & shifted them 3 times but it looks as if we’ll get together tomorrow. I’ll go early enough to dig up some ivy plants (variegated type) for your Mom and maybe to bring back one of the steel filing cabinets to use. I can really use it. I’ll phone before I leave to learn if you’ve returned – thought I’ll not expect that you have – and I’ll phone when I get back – or maybe from thee around dinner time. However I expect that you’ll stay as long as you can. Phone me when you get in if I’ve failed to find you back. I’ll stay home Tuesday until I get your call if we don’t contact tomorrow so I can be sure to have fresh berries & cake for our shortcake.
I think I’ll buy a copy of the book on Indian Philosophy. What I read of yours was quite interesting and certainly I need to know more about it than I do. I like to make notations in the margins also and I can’t do that in a library book or a borrowed one. – Continue having a good time & call me for a “Goodbye” now & then on other occasions.
I’m thinking of you.
Love – Carl
