Darlene Lutz was the first woman to be elected empress in the Casa de San Jose Court System (1982), an informal association of drag queens. Lutz worked in several Cupertino area gay bars and in 2000 she opened Dar's Hideaway, previously known as the Savoy. See Ted Sahl, From Closet to Community, pp. 133-134, 240. |
