A. GENERAL INFORMATION
A Humanities 160, Contemporary Issues, class at San Jose
State College is presenting a Survival Faire to be held
at San Jose State College, February 16-20, 1970. The
purpose of the Faire is to present to the College and to
the surrounding Bay Area communities the problems of
ecology; to create a general awareness of the problems of
environmental survival of man and the space ship earth;
and to stimulate the participants to act throughout their
particular community on the many ecological problems.
The Faire w i l l be a week of activities, events and ex-hibits
intended to encourage active participation in a l l
aspects of ecology. The program w i l l include speakers,
panels, workshops, films, exhibits, plays, a funeral pro-cession
and a nine hour Wake (dance) to celebrate the
burial of a 1970 automobile. In addition, the Faire w i l l
sponsor an Ecology Film Festival, a Photographic Essay
Contest, a Graphic Contest, a Creative Re-use of Waste
Contest, and a Poetry Contest.
The Survival Faire w i l l be held in the new College Union
at the College. All activities and events, other than
those held outdoors on the campus, w i l l be contained in
the new multi-story Union. The Faire is supported and
financed by the Associated Student Body of San Jose State
College and by private donations.
B. PURPOSE
The Poetry Contest, through a creative interpretation of
the ecological crisis, w i l l offer yet another avenue to
insight into this subject of maximum importance to all
people on Earth.

C. CONDITIONS
1. Only one entry per person is allowed.
2. Entries must be unpublished.
3. Approximate maximum length for entries—30 lines.
k. Poems must be submitted anonymously and accompa-nied
by a sealed envelope containing the author's
name and address and the first line of the poem
for identification after judging.
5. Entries must be received by February 1, 1970.
6. The use of the poems is up to the judges.
a. The Survival Faire receives first publication
rights. The poet will be notified if his
poem is published.
b. If the poem is not published, rights of pub-lication
return to the poet.
c. Rights of manuscript return to the poet after
duration of the Faire.
7. Winning poems will be read during the Faire.
8. Poems receiving prizes and Honorable Mentions w i l l
be displayed in the College Union during the
Faire. Other poems will be posted at the discre-tion
of the judges.
9. No manuscript w i l l be returned unless a self-addressed
stamped envelope is enclosed.
10. An announcement of the winners and those poems
receiving Honorable Mention will be sent to poets
who submit entries.
D. JUDGING
There w i l l be three judges—two faculty members and a
student from San Jose State College. The judges will
screen the poems submitted and select the winning
poems and those to receive Honorable Mentions. Four
prizes and ten Honorable Mentions w i l l be awarded.
