An early stipple engraving, possibly an attempt to reproduce the 1821 Dietrich bust portrait (with similar blank eyes). Frimmel and Kastner ( Beethovenjahrbuch, p. 195) describe a version of this print with Beethoven's birth and death years listed under the name. The present issue, without dates, raises the possibility that this was an earlier version issued while the composer was still living. Neither version appears in the extensive portrait holdings of the Beethoven Haus in Bonn.... [dealer information]. |
