Crowds are gathered for the arrival of the "Thomas Flyer" at the Lamotte House, northeast corner of Santa Clara Street and San Pedro Street. To get a better view, four women stand on the seats of a car. The 1908 New York to Paris Automobile Race was sponsored by the New York Times and Le Matin. National teams competed. The American team, driving a car manufactured by the E. R. Thomas Motor Company, won. |

Written on verso: "8/15 Dear Mr. Arbuckle Saw this picture in last Sunday's Mercury and thought I'd send you a much earlier photo of the same block taken in 1908. My uncle Charles Deitz had his gold medal potatoe (sic) chip and [illegible word] brand mayonnaise (with Ernie Renzel Black & White Stores) Factory down the street on San Pedro for many years. Don Dietz." Sepia toned photograph, copy. Good condition. |
