Note |
Black and white photograph. Good condition. Written on verso: "South Mkt St. Cor. Post. 1868 Note Martin Murphy Bldg. on N.E. Corner Used as S.C. Co. Ct'h'se during the early '60s." Also Typed note on verso reads "Market Street looking south about 1868 from the top of the Hensley House, which stood on the northwest corner of Market and Santa Clara Streets. The windmill at the intersection of Market and Eldorado Streets pumped water into a nearby cistern for use in fighting fires. The big open field beyond San Fernando Street is what remained of The Plaza after the Lyman Survey of 1848 and known today as Plaza de Cesar Chavez. The two black towers a little above and to the left of the center of the photo are the towers of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, which burned down in 1875. The two-story building with wooden awnings at the far left is the Murphy Building, erected by Martin Murphy, Jr. in 1861." CLYDE ARBUCKLE stamp. |
