Note |
Sepia-toned photograph. Good condition except for some scratches. Clipping on verso from Arbuckle's SJMN "Nostalgia" column. Text reads: "The political banner spanning Santa Clara Street, between First and Market, in San Jose, indicate this photo was taken in 1888, when Grover Cleveland unsuccessfully contended with Benjamin Harrison for the Presidency of the United States. It also dates the streetcar on Sam Bishop's San Jose & Santa Clara Railroad, which, in pre-trolley days, had an underground electrical system." Struck out in red, "All the here-shown buildings kept their wooden awnings and remained unchanged until just before the turn of the century, when expansions and alterations began to come in quick succession. The Rea Building, built behind the Tower at Market Street, added a couple of stories to its height. The Auzerais House, on the near right, converted from hotel rooms to business and professional offices. Though slow in starting, the Farmers' Union at San Pedro street, eventually leveled off to its foundation and rebuilt from there. Later changes removed the Auzerais, Smout, Newhall (Spring) and Rea buildings from the landscape altogether." Written on verso of photograph. |
