The San Jose Redevelopment Agency (SJRA) was a public, government organization created in 1956 by the City of San Jose to improve the quality of life for all who live, work, and play in the City by creating jobs, developing affordable housing, strengthening neighborhoods, and building public facilities.
Governed by the San Jose City Council who served as the Redevelopment Agency Board, the Redevelopment Agency partnered with business and the community to revitalize the economy in San Jose. The SJRA was of the largest tax increment producing redevelopment agencies in California and was active in 21 Project Areas throughout San Jose. Redevelopment Agency Project Areas represent approximately 16 percent of the City's area and provided approximately 33 percent of San Jose jobs. Through a balanced series of investments and initiatives, the Redevelopment Agency facilitated and oversaw comprehensive programs for development to revitalize the City's Downtown, Neighborhoods, and Industrial areas.
Effective February 1, 2012, all redevelopment agencies in the State of California were dissolved pursuant to AB 1X 26.
