Mrs. Sadie Gilmore Hackley, Mrs. Beatrice French Bolt, Edith Parsons, Laura Bailey, all Stanford alumnae, helped to organize the Y.W. in 1905. First headquarters in Hunkins house, Fourth and St. James Street. First house matron and Gen. Sec'y - Miss Porter Miss McCormick (later of Sacramento) did Traveler's Aid work. I was then recording Sec'y of Board of Directors. I spent Oct.-Sept. 1906-1907 in Battle Creek Michigan. Returned in 1907 (Sept.) to become General Sec'y. Board of Directors had had to give up Rooming House. Rented offices in Wilcox Building, First and San Fernando. A bunch of pledge cards, the result of an appeal for the prospective reorganized Association (made in [illegible] evangelistic meeting, I believe) was turned over to me, and I began to try to collect some of them. One of the most distinctive features of our work was the fine employment bureau; and our Sunday afternoon devotional services were very helpful. We had some of the outstanding talent of San Jose among our speakers.
