He says he expects to spend the winter in San jose. He was formerly a commission merchant here and perhaps you knew him. In your last letter you requested me to write once a month and I thought I would do it. But it is now two month and a half since I wrote and I can assure you it is a hard thing to do all the correspondence. If I knew what you were doing or what you have in contemplation or any thing specifick about your country to furnish me matter for the writing of letters I could readily enough do it But so far you have declined or neglected yo give me one Geographical idea of California a piece of information I am so very anxious to obtain and in all my letters have requested so strongly yet I can get nothing. Can you not tell me how far san Jose is from san Francisco and in what direction North South east or West and so of Sacramento City What their population business the population of San Francisco What the climate soil productions I have asked in every letter whether the soil and climate are such as will sustain a dense population after the gold shall have been exhausted? How is the country timbered and watered? Do the potatoes grow wild in the woods as they do in Mexico? Could you not procure some potato seeds? A lot of good Potato Seeds would be in this part of the United States a great public good and eventually worth millions
